my background

“For 7 years I worked at a state secondary in Croydon. The income deprivation indexes were low, and the difficulties students faced were very real, but it was a school full of aspiration for what could be achieved. Many students and teachers worked incredibly hard.

The one thing I was always on the hunt for was more time. Time to plan a better lesson, provide more extensive feedback, support a fellow teacher, or nurture relationships with the students you felt slipping away.

We were all struggling with little adequate support and guidance. Good teachers tried their hardest, but their time, resources and expertise were divided between hundreds of students, and never-ending to-do lists.

We all struggled, and young people dropped between the cracks. Some struggled on; others just shut down and gave up.

I left teaching to spend quality time raising my own children. However, I’ve never stopped working with young people, particularly those who were looking for a mentor to guide them. It is a partnership I believe many young people can benefit from hugely, which is why I’ve founded Breakthrough Approach, to work with young people facing barriers no-one has yet helped them surmount.

With the right support, every child can believe in themselves, developing the resilience and necessary skills to face not just academic challenges, but the challenges we all face in life."
