our approach

We need to meet young people where they are, not where we expect them to be.

For a student to reach their learning potential, they need to be ready to learn. Schools and tutors focus on delivering the learning, in the limited time they have with individual students. They are not well equipped to focus on and develop personal skills so integral to a child being ready to learn.

MENTORING VS. TUTORING

We provide mentoring, not tutoring - but what’s the difference?

Mentoring focuses on the child. Tutoring focuses on the curriculum.

When it comes to traditional learning, schools and tutors take a 2 dimensional approach; they consider the subject matter and how it should be taught. The student’s readiness to learn (the 3rd dimension) isn’t considered - nor can it be.

The disposition of the student will define their academic performance.

Direction of learning
What are they learning?

Delivery
How are they being taught?

Disposition
Is the student ready to learn?

Pathway to Potential

The reality is that more teaching/tutoring isn't the answer. It is readiness to learn that defines academic performance.

barriers to learning

There are three barriers to learning

These issues aren't treated with more study time and greater study effort. When the root causes of the issues are not recognised, the treatment usually fails.

Procrastination
Avoiding study and not really knowing why.

Pressure / Stress
Pressure from peers, family, and school to meet expectations.

Perfectionism
Wanting everything to be perfect & losing faith when it isn’t.

A New Approach

Learning Adjustment Cycle

At each stage of the process we follow a simple adjustment cycle that ensures we move from understanding to action as we continually seek to improve.

Awareness
We get to know the child and become aware of the challenges they are facing.

Understanding
We work with the child to help them understand various ways they can overcome these challenges.

Action
We create and agree an action plan, which allows the child to confidently move forward.

Learning Adjustment Cycle

Focusing on the student, not the curriculum. Each cycle uncovers the current barriers to learning, providing options of how to overcome them, and determines actions that will help the student make manageable adjustments on-going.
