Supporting a Student let down by their School
The Challenge
To lessen the negative impact of inadequate school teaching and support, whilst working to meet the learning needs of the student as he prepared for his examinations.
The Result
GCSEs, History A-Level, University Entry requirements met.
At various stages his schools refused to recognise learning needs they were fully aware of when accepting him onto courses. This led to inadequate teaching coupled with no personal skill development support. It left the student feeling disorganised and demotivated.
Our Approach
This student needed a mentor to bolster his confidence and emotional resilience, having lost his father to illness only weeks into the mentoring beginning.
The mentor spent time building a solid foundation for the relationship, finding common interests in sport and history. The student was enthusiastic but would tire quickly, so the mentor needed to change their usual approach to break activities down further, and build more reflection time in to ensure consolidation of learning. Trust and rhythm grew quickly, allowing the mentor to work on developing organisation and time management skills, which were desperately under-developed. As exams approached, more and more time was dedicated to revision skills, and helping the student become more autonomous.
Success
GCSEs / History A-Level / University Entry requirements met
Passes at GCSE, allowing the student to pick History as one of his A-Levels, achieving the grades required to meet his university’s entry requirements.
